What will I be doing?

There are a lot of different courses that you can do. Here are some of them:


Drama, cookery, art, gardening, working in a shop, reading and writing, numbers, computers.

There is a course about learning about different types of jobs.

There is a course for people who would find the other courses difficult. It is called the LEAF award.

Some of the courses are to prepare you to go on to get a qualification. You get a qualification on some of the courses. Some are to study as a hobby.

What days and times is it on?

Different courses are on different days. Some are long courses. Some are just for 2 hours a week.

Does it cost anything?

It is free if you are on benefits.

Who do I need to talk to?

If you want a book about all the courses at the college ring Student Services on (0191) 200 4000.

How do I get there?

Most of the courses are held in the Trevelyan Building. This is where most of the college buildings are, in Rye Hill. You can get a bus along Scotswood Road, or walk from the railway station.

Cookery and drama are held at John Marley Centre. This is on Whickham View in Scotswood (buses 30,32 and 38).

What sort of people go?

Some of the courses are for everyone. Some are just for people with learning disabilties.

What about lunch?

There are canteens in the Trevelyan Building and John Marley Centre.

I.D. (Interactive Development)

What will I be doing?

There are a lot of different courses. They change quite often. The courses are mostly about speaking up and being independent. They use a lot of drama. Some are about independant living skills. Some are about preparing for work. Some are about using a computer. Most of the courses use drama.

Does it cost anything?

It is free.

Who do I need to talk to?

What sort of people go?

Adult Basic Education

What will I be doing?

Learning to read and write and use numbers.

What days and times is it on?

There are courses on every day and some evenings.

Does it cost anything?

It is free.

Ability Training

What will I be doing?

Learning skills to help you get a job. Reading and writing, numbers, computers, administration.

What days and times is it on?

Different courses on different days. Monday to Friday. 9.30 a.m.- 4.30 p.m.

How do I get there?

It is at Lynnwood Business Centre, Lynnwood Terrace. It is behind the Bowling Alley on Westgate Road, near the General Hospital.

What sort of people go?

Unemployed people with disabilties.

 

Heaton Adult Association

What will I be doing?

There are courses in art, art and craft, sewing, cooking for one, keeping safe.

What days and times is it on?

Art. Thursdays. 1.00 - 3.00 p.m.
Cooking. Mondays. 12.30 - 3.00 p.m.
Keeping Safe. Thursdays. 4.30 - 6.00 p.m.

Does it cost anything?

It is free.

How do I get there?

It is the old school on Trewhitt Road. Get a bus along Chillingham Road and walk down.

What sort of people go?

These classes are for people with learning difficulties. Other people use the building.


First Aid Courses.

What will I be doing?

Learning how to help people who have hurt themselves. 

What days and times is it on?

Get a group of people together and organise your own course.
Or you can go on a course with other people.
You have have to wait to get on a course.

All sorts of people.

Courses about art and crafts, computers, and Maths and English.

 It i free if you are on benefit or it is between £7.20 and £14.40.

Skills for People

What will I be doing?

The courses at Skills for People are all planned and run by learning disabled people. They include group talks, drama, videos and information in pictures. At the moment they only have courses for groups who can pay. They hope to start doing other courses soon.

 

What days and times is it on?

Different courses are on different days. Ask when you ring.

Does it cost anything?

The courses cost £2 a day.

 

Who do I need to talk to?

Ring Skills for People on (0191) 281 8737 and they will tell you what is happening.

What about lunch?

Lunch is included for all day courses. It is usually a buffet, pizza or fish and chips. :

How do I get there?

The building is called Key House. It is on Tankerville Place in Jesmond. It is about half way between Jesmond and West Jesmond Metro stations. It is quite difficult to find on the bus, but if you ring someone might be able to show you the way the first time. If you need a taxi, they can get one.

What sort of people go?

The courses are for people with disabilities.

 

USE IT Centres

What will I be doing?

Learn how to use computers. Borrow the computers to look on the internet. Do courses about digital photography, computer crafts and computer art.

What days and times is it on?

There are 8 Centres. they have different opening times. They all have times when you can just drop in and use the computer (with help if you need it). They all have courses too.

Does it cost anything?

It is free for everyone. The only people who have to pay are people with full-time jobs.

How do I get there?

There is one on Westgate Road on the other side of the road from the Tyne Theatre (Opera House).

There is one at the Brinkburn Centre, in the old Byker Library on Brinkburn Street.

There is one in Westgate Community College, at the top end of West Road, just past the shops.

The SHAW IT Centre is at Suite 1, the Stamp Excahnge, Westgate Rd. (near St Nicholas' Cathedral) It has special facilities for disabled people.

The Newsroom is in Shieldfield near Shields Road.

There is one in Lemington on Tyneview.

There are 2 at MEA House in the middle of Newcastle. One is for blind people and one is for older people.
